This is one of my favorite songs and I’ve got to play this songs in many occasions. Anyways it’s always good to see how other people play the same song you have play a hundred times. At least you can learn some new voicing and idea so you can bring something fresh to your performance next time!

I’ve always wanted to play like a gospel piano player. Not the I’m a religious person but I just love the ways they voice their chords. It seems like a magic to me! I used to try different way by myself and it never come close to what I hear in the recording. Once again Youtube help me to find some great tutorial for me to start learning something different from what I normally play.

Personally, I think funk is one of the most difficult style to play on the piano except you are already a drummer. My friend used to say that playing funk is like playing a drum on a piano and I couldn’t agree more with him.

Each video is not very long but I believe it would takes us months to master each lesson. Even if you don’t really understand or catch what he shows you, this video will still inspire you. Chick Corea & Hiromi Uehara – Spain

Chick Corea is my favorite pianist and also one of the best in the world. I’m sure that many of you would agree with me about that. I kinda like this performance more than others I’ve seen for a few reason.

Firstly, ‘Spain’ is also my favorite Chick Corea’s piece. Secondly, the way he perform with Hiromi has produced such a wonderful and unique mix of the western and eastern flavour. (even though what she played is not really eastern, but I still smell it!) Thirdly, I like how Chick Corea was so calm when he was performing versus Hiromi obviously tried to give her best shot. Anyway, I like this video so much that I would like this video to be the first performance video on this blog!

Performance Details:

Live in Tokyo on September 2nd-3rd 2006, at Tokyo Jazz Festival 2006 in Japan. Chick Corea and Hiromi Uehara play “Spain” (by Chick Corea). They played together again on September 2007.

Misty – Jazz piano lesson

I have many friends who play jazz and I am always amazed at how they learn their music. Not all of them anyway, but they can just go to some places where their ‘teachers’ play and they just watch and listen for hours. They then try to catch it without talking or saying any word and go back home to practice.

If you are those kind of student, then this video should be able to give you something to chew. Misty is one of my favorite standard jazz piece and I really like the way it is played in this video. I only watched it a few times and I think I’ve learnt something already.

Doug McKenzie is the guy who produced this video. This is a ‘trio’ version of the ballad ‘Misty’ – with lots of extra information helpful to jazz piano students. You can also see more of his lessons at his site at http://web.newsguy.com/dougmck

Andrew Furmanczyk is a Canadian piano teacher and performer. He is quite popular on YouTube and I really like what he describe his lesson that “I think people anywhere deserve a chance to learn how to play piano for free! It’s an international language and piano as well as music is such a wonderful skill to have.” He actually had produced more than 30+ good quality piano & music lesson videos on his YouTube channel so far.

I have taken here only a few of his videos just enough to introduce you to this wonderful piano guy. I don’t know him personally at all but I really like what he is doing.

Piano Lesson – A Little Nightmare Music

The first time I saw this video I would say that I don’t actually like this kind of humor despite their impressive performance level. So I went to checked out their website just to find out who they are and what are they doing. After I checked out their bio and looked at their other videos, I realized that they are actually pretty cool!

Richard Hyung-Ki Joo is a Korean-British genius (even he looks completely Korean) and he usually perform a lot with his mate, ALEKSEY IGUDESMAN with the intention of bringing classical music closer to the audience under the name “A Little Nightmare Music” .
